Public education has always been an important issue for society, but not for the political class in the last 21 years of democracy. From my point of view, very little has been done to really improve the quality of education in Chile, where only private schools have the best results in screening tests, such as SIMCE and PSU. Schoola as Carmela Carvajal or the historic Instituto Nacional, escape from low grade point average of municipal schools in the country. On the other hand, students in traditional universities like the University of Chile and the University of Santiago should pay large sums of money in tariff forcing borrow to finance their education, but debt for many years.
There are many things to improve, the colleges, infrastructure, academic requirements, fees, funding, scholarships etc. But the focus here is to improve education and hopefully a poor boy and a rich kid tomorrow have the same chance of getting into a college that gives decentem education, no matter whether paid education or not.
It is almost a utopia to think that the current conservative government of Chile, will be able to provide a solution to this problem, or at least a step in the requests of students. Therefore, it is important that social movement continues to grow, not stagnate, so that one day we can say that they won, Chileans were once united can defeat this foul prevailing educational system, so we can live in a country a little more fair, less inequality and social injustice, so that future generations can be proud of their country.
